Germany 'too soon' for Lennon
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The Tottenham head coach, Martin Jol, believes that Aaron Lennon is one of the most exciting talents he has ever worked with, but still does not believe the teenager should be part of England's World Cup squad this summer.
The 18-year-old has been a revelation for Spurs as they push for a place in next season's Champions' League. The north London club are four points ahead of Arsenal going into the Easter programme.
Spurs face a trip to Everton today and a home game with title-chasing Manchester United at White Hart Lane two days later. Lennon will figure highly in both games and while Jol is full of admiration for the youngster's pace and ability, he still thinks the finals in Germany have come too soon for him.
"He would not have played as many games for Liverpool, Chelsea or Manchester United, so we have been adventurous," said Jol. "It was a big gamble for us but Jermaine Jenas and Michael Dawson were the same. He is probably one of the most exciting players for the last 10 years. Shaun Wright-Phillips is the same but I don't think he was 18 when you noticed him.
"I still think he can be better but Sven [Goran Eriksson] and his assistant have to make a judgement about him. If he plays well for the last five games, scores and creates things, then maybe he will go to the World Cup.
"You have to show what you can do on the pitch and fulfil your potential but he would need another year I think."
