The Welsh club are without a victory in six Premier League matches as fears grow that a relegation battle lies on the horizon.
Former Swans boss Brendan Rodgers, David Moyes, Nigel Pearson and Mark Warburton are the early favourites to replace the 36-year-old at the Liberty Stadium.
Should the reports, published most recently by the Daily Telegraph, prove to be correct, Monk would be the fourth managerial casualty of the season so far. Swansea will have to pay the former defender a figure in the region of £3m in compensation.
Rodgers, who was sacked at Liverpool in October, guided the club to promotion in 2011 via the Championship play-offs, defeating former club Reading at Wembley, before establishing the Swans in the top flight.
Other candidates include ex-Manchester United boss Moyes who recently left Real Sociedad after a decidedly poor spell in Spain while Pearson is looking for work since leaving Leicester in July. Andre Villas-Boas, currently at Zenit, is also a rank outsider for the post.
See below for a list of possible replacements...
Monk played 226 matches for the Swans in all four divisions before leading them to their highest-ever points tally as manager last year.
