Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

A Luka Modric-free Tottenham opened their pre-season campaign in South Africa with a 1-0 defeat against Kaizer Chiefs, who scored on the break in added time.

Spurs made seven substitutions at the break, including bringing on defender Bongani Khumalo, who was signed from the South African side Supersport United in January.

Arsenal changed all 11 at half-time in their 1-1 draw against Hangzhou Greentown in China on their tour of Asia. The Gunners fell behind to a goal by the Uruguayan midfielder Sebastian Vasquez but equalised through Carlos Vela before half-time.

Wolves also took the teams for each half approach at Crewe, which meant scope for outings for the newcomers Roger Johnson and Dorus De Vries. The exercise ended in a 2-1 victory for Crewe, Antoni Sarcevic scoring a superb winner from 25 yards shortly after Kevin Doyle's equaliser. Crewe had taken the lead in the first half through Shaun Miller, who rounded off a team move.

Blackburn went to Morecambe to take on Accrington Stanley and the home side in a double-header at the Globe Arena. They opened by beating Accrington 2-1, with Keith Andrews and Niko Kalinic scoring. Kurtis Guthrie scored for Stanley. Later David Dunn nodded down for Mauro Formica to net a second-half equaliser in a 1-1 draw against Morecambe, for whom Phil Jevons scored.
