From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Mohamed Salah

Salah’s owners nearly had their fingers burned last week when he was left out of the starting line-up against Crystal Palace, only for him to come on in the second half, score two and assist another for a 16-point haul.

Hopefully that brief time on the bench is enough to stop Jurgen Klopp from resting him over the remainder of the Christmas period, as West Bromwich Albion’s trip to Anfield on Sunday is a plum fixture and makes Salah this week’s outstanding captaincy candidate.

Ruben Dias

Manchester City’s defence has been reliable for some time now, the challenge is picking the players who can be relied upon to start. John Stones offers a cheap route into the backline but is not yet as nailed-on as Dias.

The record signing from Benfica has started every Premier League game since his arrival in late September and has the potential to pick up bonus points in City’s lower-scoring games, with a nine-point return in last weekend’s narrow win at Southampton.

Anwar El Ghazi

Aston Villa’s mini-run of favourable fixtures comes to an abrupt end over Christmas but those waiting to use their first wildcard in gameweek 16 - the deadline for it to be played - may want to consider El Ghazi as a one-week punt.

The winger appears to have taken over penalty duties following Ollie Watkins’ miss against West Ham and has three goals in his last three appearances, having started the last two. Dean Smith’s side welcome Crystal Palace to Villa Park on Boxing Day.

Che Adams

Danny Ings’ latest injury - a hamstring problem, picked up in the defeat to City - is a blow to Southampton but at least Adams has proved that he can step up to the plate in his strike partner’s absence.

Adams is the sixth-highest scoring forward in fantasy this season, with a goal and an assist in his last three. For £6.0m, that is a decent return and he could well improve on those figures when Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side visit Fulham.

Trent Alexander-Arnold

Back to Liverpool, where one of the many encouraging signs from their 7-0 rout of Crystal Palace was an assist for Alexander-Arnold, who seems to have fully recovered from a calf injury.

Alexander-Arnold looked essential in pre-season but set up just one goal in his first eight appearances, causing many managers to sell. Those who buy him back at the right time could benefit hugely and Liverpool’s forthcoming run is favourable.

Honourable mentions: Emiliano Martinez, Fabian Balbuena, Joel Matip, Raphinha, Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Captaincy: Mohamed Salah
