Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Mohamed Salah / Sadio Mané
The stand-out fixture of the week is Liverpool’s trip to Craven Cottage to play Fulham, who are improving under Scott Parker but still should concede to the champions. There’s a catch, though: rotation.
Salah is this week’s outstanding captaincy option while Diogo Jota potentially offers a cheap route to attacking returns but both started and played Wednesday’s Champions League dead rubber against Midtjylland. If you prefer to play it safe, go with Sadio Mané.
Danny Ings
It’s hard to tell whether Sheffield United’s dreadful start will continue or whether they’re just due some good luck but their underlying defensive numbers have been consistently poor, suggesting the defence is one to target.
Ings made a scoring return in the late win over Brighton on Monday night and though Southampton’s attacking numbers have dipped since his knee injury, they should pick up again with him back up front alongside Che Adams.
Sergio Reguilon
Tottenham’s defence has emerged from a brutal run of fixtures with three clean sheets from three due to Jose Mourinho’s typically conservative big-game approach and remains the top flight’s best - conceding just nine times this season.
Reguilon offers the most attacking upside of all Tottenham’s defensive options, with two assists to his name from eight appearances, and travels to play a mediocre attack and defence in the form of Crystal Palace.
Jarrod Bowen
Leeds welcome West Ham to Elland Road on Friday night to open the weekend in a game that is difficult to call. Both sides have impressed this season and West Ham’s defensive decline over the last few weeks could spell points for Patrick Bamford.
On the other hand, Marcelo Bielsa’s side have given up chance after chance to opponents all season long and West Ham will get opportunities. With that in mind, Bowen could profit and has taken the most shots of any player in David Moyes’ side.
Christian Pulisic
Injury has hampered Pulisic’s start to the new campaign but he finally appears ready to be a viable fantasy option, with a goal last time out against Leeds and Hakim Ziyech likely to miss the next two weeks.
Chelsea travel to Everton, whose defence continues to underwhelm. Carlo Ancelotti’s side have conceded as many as basement-dwelling Sheffield United and now have to welcome the league’s second-highest scorers.
Honourable mentions: Alex McCarthy, Andy Robertson, Son Heung-Min, Patrick Bamford, Callum Wilson
Captaincy: Mohamed Salah
