Fan's Eye View: Portsmouth
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Your team's best performance last season?
Beating Manchester United 2-0 a week after they ended Arsenal's massive unbeaten run.
And the worst?
Either losing 3-0 at Villa Park, or the 3-0 defeat to Watford in the League Cup where we bravely stuck one up front.
Who was your best player last season?
Dejan Stefanovic, Mr Reliable.
Who was the most under-rated?
Andy Griffin, who got a torrid time when he first turned up at the club but gradually forced himself into the first choice right back, although still struggled with injury.
And the worst player?
Ricardo Fuller - one goal in thirty-seven appearances.
What was the most memorable moment?
Three which it's very difficult to choose from, all involving LuaLua - his 20 yard curler against Southampton to make it 4-1; his injury time equaliser at Anfield; his last minute winner to make it 3-2 against West Brom after being 2-1 down ten minutes earlier.
Funniest moment, if any?
Rory Delap getting hit in the bollocks from six yards away by Patrik Berger.
Whos was the best individual performance against you?
Shaun Wright-Phillips, who terrorised David Unsworth (some achievement) when Man City beat us 3-1 at Fratton.
Best set of fans, besides your own?
Liverpool "brought" 3,000 on a Tuesday night, although how many actually came from Liverpool remains to be seen...
Best chant?
"Always look on the bright side of life" - sang to Southampton fans
Which ground is your favourite to visit and why?
Craven Cottage is a nice day out since it's fairly friendly, you get to walk through the park from the tube station and as an away fan I always find it easier to make more noise when you're behind the goal.
What improvements need to be made this season?
The goals need to be spread throughout the team, especially from the midfielders. We've relied on Yakubu for far too long.
Individual with most to prove?
Skopelitis - despite being a pretty solid midfielder, he's still not that highly rated mainly due to the fact he was signed by an unpopular manager.
Which game are you most looking forward to?
Typically all the big guns - Chelsea, Arsenal, Man Utd - but also Fulham on New Year's Eve, just to see how few fans they bring.
Which of your young players has impressed you?
Gary O'Neil; he's been around forever but he's still only 21.
If money was no object which player or manager would like to see at your club?
Ronaldinho or Adriano wouldn't go amiss.
What would you consider to be a good season?
Survival and a quarter final. A season with one manager would also be a bonus.
How would you sum up your manager?
He doesn't leave anything to chance - he makes sure that everything is in our own hands and that we fully research our opponents, so there is nothing they can do that will surprise us. Hard on discipline and with an almost scientific approach to training, it's a step up from our previous managers who would just take the squad on a 40 mile cross country run and count that as "pre-season training".
If you had to put a £1m bet on where your team finishes, where would you say?
14th.
