Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The Fulham defender Zat Knight has been charged with violent behaviour by the Football Association following an incident with the Blackburn striker Jon Stead during the Premiership match at Loftus Road on 12 April. He has until 4 May to respond.
During the first half, the pair were running back towards the halfway line when Stead fell to the ground clutching his face. Blackburn claim he was head-butted by Knight, who escaped punishment on the night as the incident was missed by the referee, Mike Dean, and his officials.
After the match Stead claimed the Fulham player had "put a nut on me", while Rovers' manager, Graeme Souness, said: "We feel Zat Knight should have been sent off. The crowd went quiet after the incident so I think the only four people in the ground who didn't see what happened were the four officials."
The Fulham manager, Chris Coleman, was hoping his 23-year-old defender would not be handed a ban. He said: "They were running back and had a bit of a tussle... Zat has put his head in there. If the ref sees that he is off. I hope he doesn't get a ban, but we'll have to wait and see what happens."
Birmingham's goalkeeper, Maik Taylor, has failed in his appeal against being sentg off during a match at Portsmouth on 12 April for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity. Having refused his appeal the FA said: "As it was his second sending-off of the season, he will serve a two-match suspension from 1 May."
