Greater Manchester Police are expected to double their normal number of officers, in anticipation of a large number of United fans travelling the short distance to Wigan without a ticket for the match. The Wigan chairman, Dave Whelan, fears that a large number of people without tickets may congregate outside the JJB Stadium or in the town centre, ready for a celebration should United win the title.
The GMP chief superintendent, Lee Bruckshaw, said his force was well equipped to cope with any eventuality. He said: "While we do not discuss staffing levels, I am satisfied we have sufficient cover to police all eventualities and to ensure the game and any post-match celebrations pass off without trouble."
The Premier League will share the policing bill for the match with Wigan.
