The Portuguese midfielder equalised with a brilliant header after Bernard opened the scoring, and Fernandes netted a second when his cross went untouched by Marcus Rashford but still found the net.
Jordan Pickford was perhaps lucky to avoid a penalty when he fumbled a cross and kicked Harry Maguire, adding more pressure to the heavily-scrutinised goalkeeper.
The result sends United 13th, whilst Everton fall to fifth after losing their third league game in a row.
Everton
Jordan Pickford – 6
Perhaps could have done better with the second, but the England goalkeeper could do little about Fernandes’ equaliser. Having said that, his double error – fumbling the ball and then kicking Harry Maguire – was awful. Questions about his place are deserved.
Seamus Coleman – 6
Coleman did his job and was solid in possession, but United’s best moves often came down the left-hand side and that isn’t a coincidence.
Mason Holgate – 5
He struggled throughout, and a miscommunication with Sigurdsson almost cost his side. He was at fault for the second goal, as Rashford was completely unmarked in the six-yard box.
Michael Keane – 5
The England international had a day to forget, struggling to stay with the pace of Rashford or the movement of Fernandes.
Lucas Digne – 7
The Frenchman delivers an excellent ball, and was a threat throughout down the left. Perhaps should have picked out Calvert-Lewin when he went for goal and hit the outside of the post.
Abdoulaye Doucoure – 7
His excellent work-rate won possession from de Gea, which Everton failed to take advantage of. His influence waned in the second half.
Allan – 6
The Brazilian struggled to impose himself in this game, and was booked for a late challenge on Fred.
Gylfi Sigurdsson – 5
Sigurdsson was tidy in possession, but his lack of defensive prowess showed as United got in behind him at will.
James Rodriguez – 5
His early back-heel to Coleman was as good as it got for the Colombian.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin – 7
The England striker absolutely dominated United’s defenders in the air in the first half, and he was at the centre of all of Everton’s best moves in the first half.
Bernard – 6
Replacing the suspended Richarlison, it was a fine finish from the Brazilian winger to get his first league goal of the season. He linked up excellently with Digne, and caused United a lot of problems but struggled immensely in the second half.
Substitutes
Alex Iwobi – 6. Brought necessary energy.
Cenk Tosun – 6.
Manchester United
David de Gea – 6
The Spaniard was put under pressure when in possession with his feet, but had little to do.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 6
He struggled to deal with the threat down Everton’s left flank early, but he grew into the game as time progressed.
Victor Lindelof – 4
The Swede couldn’t buy a header in the opening period, and was bullied by Calvert-Lewin.
Harry Maguire – 6
Not a vintage performance, but it didn’t need to be. He made a crucial block to deny James’ volley, and then an important header to stop Iwobi’s cross finding Calver-Lewin.
Luke Shaw – 6
After a shaky start, the left back whipped in a cracking ball to pick out Fernandes.
Scott McTominay – 7
The Scot suffered to find his feet early in the game, but soon settled to dominate Allan and Doucoure.
Fred – 7
The Brazilian continues to impress recently, working well with McTominay to run the second half.
Juan Mata – 5
The Spaniard wasted a counter with a poor cross, struggled throughout.
Bruno Fernandes – 8
The talismanic midfielder scored an impressive equaliser, firing his unmarked header past Pickford. His cross, which was meant for Rashford, found the back of the net via the post. Booked for a late challenge in the second half, and perhaps should have been sent off after a series of fouls, but sealed the deal with the assist for Cavani’s effort.
Marcus Rashford – 7
The man-of-the-moment was a threat throughout, but he should have scored from Fernandes’ cross.
Anthony Martial – 5
Perhaps should have scored after Fred’s flick, and he failed to take advantage of an excellent cross from McTominay. Anonymous in the second half.
Substitutes
Axel Tuanzebe – 6.
Paul Pogba – 6.
Edinson Cavani – 7. Put in by Fernandes on the counter-attack to seal victory with his first United goal.
