From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Chelsea's 3-1 defeat to Everton at Goodison Park in Saturday's lunchtime kick-off extended their miserable start to the season, which has now seen them take just four points from their opening five games.

This was a milestone defeat but not only because it was so unexpected.

As Steven Naismith's strikes rained in on the Chelsea goal, Twitter's statisticians kept reminding us of just how badly Jose Mourinho's men have started the season, and just how difficult it will be for them to retain their crown.

The title is almost certainly out of sight. You have to go a long way back to find a side who recovered from such a poor start to claim the championship...

In fact, they'll be lucky to finish second, given that no Premier League team has ever started this badly and finished higher than third.

It seems to be part of a pattern. Barring a marginal improvement last season, Mourinho's Chelsea defences seem to have conceded goals at a quicker rate season-on-season.

What's more, today marked the first time that one of his Chelsea team have conceded a Premier League hat-trick. It was a perfect one (left foot, right foot, header), at that.
