Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The father of struggling Chelsea winger Eden Hazard has said that there is no chance he leaves Stamford Bridge this summer, despite rumours continuing to link him with an exit from the club.
Hazard was Chelsea's best player and the Premier League Player of the Year only a season ago as the Blues won the title for the first time in five years, but has been a shadow of his former self this campaign, failing to score a goal in the league so far.
The 25-year-old's last goal came on 3 May last year, the day the Blues were officially crowned champions.
Hazard has often been linked with a move to one of Paris Saint-Germain or Real Madrid and he has previously spoken out about his admiration for both clubs, especially PSG; in February he said it would be "difficult to say no to PSG, or to any of the teams capable of winning the Champions League."
Those words fuelled speculation, while his listless performances this season have seen a large section of the Chelsea support lose patience with the Belgian.
When Chelsea were dumped out of the Champions League by PSG on Wednesday night, Hazard was again anonymous, but earned the ire of the home support for swapping shirts with Angel Di Maria at half-time.
He was booed off by a significant minority of supporters when he was substituted by interim manager Guus Hiddink. Hazard last year signed a new deal that runs until 2020 and Chelsea will resist all offers from interested clubs.
His father, Thierry, has stated that it is "out of the question" that Hazard leaves the Blues this summer and also says his poor form stems from the injury he suffered against Leicester City, Jose Mourinho's final game in charge of the club.
"Eden has never said he wanted to play for PSG," Thierry said in Belgian newspaper Le Soir. "He’s just confirmed that PSG have become a big club and that every player would like to play for clubs of that level. Eden has a contract until 2020. It’s out of question that he’ll leave the club at the moment."
He added: "Eden’s lack of form is due to an injury, an inflammation in the hip, that he’s been carrying now for three or four months.
"It’s not a bad injury, but when the pain appears, it feels like a stabbing. It’s feels like a knife is stabbed in it.
"He was feeling the pain early in the game [against Leicester] and that’s why he has asked for a substitution. Instead of giving Eden a time to overcome the injury and have a proper rest, they push him to play because they have some important games... So he has no choice... Which player hasn’t had highs of lows in his career? It’s the first time in his professional career that he’s confronted with a difficult period. He’s not machine, as we know."
