The right-back fell awkwardly in the first half while attempting to intercept a pass and picked up a groin injury in the process.
Janmatt, who was subsequently substituted for Siem De Jong, is believed to have vented his frustration at the injury in the dressing room and punched the wall, damaging his hand.
The Holland international left St Mary’s wearing a sling, according to The Chronicle, and both injuries are being assessed ahead of this Saturday’s clash with Swansea City.
Newcastle remain mired in relegation trouble following the defeat at St Mary’s. Goals from Shane Long, Graziano Pelle and Victor Wanyama consigned Rafael Benitez's side to another debilitating reverse, with Andros Townsend scoring a single consolation goal in response.
Benitez, who took over at St James' Park last month following the dismissal of Steve McClaren, has taken just one point from a possible 12 during his tenure so far, with the club six points adrift from safety.
