Jose Mourinho was at his sarcastic best as he revealed striker Diego Costa is a doubt for Chelsea’s trip to Manchester United next week.

Costa played no part in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Crystal Palace and will also miss Tuesday’s Champions League game against Maribor.

Mourinho, clearly seething that Costa had played twice for Spain in the international break, said: “No, he can’t play on Tuesday.

“I have no idea [when he can play]. The only thing I can say is that he went to the national team. He played two big matches against Slovakia and Luxembourg, and he came back in condition where he’s not available to play for his club.”

When Mourinho asked had he raised the issue with the Spanish medical team, he replied: “For what? For what? To spend money on phone calls? No.

“I think he will be in great conditions in mid-November to be back for the national team. That is for sure. Our medical department will take good care of him and he will be in perfect condition. He will play for me when he has free-time from the national team.”
