Malky Mackay's embittered fall out with Cardiff City has cost him his chance to become the new manager of Crystal Palace.

Having decided not to appoint the frontrunner Mackay as Tony Pulis' successor, Palace's co-owner Steve Parish turned to former England manager Glenn Hoddle, revealed by The Independent as one of the three on the club's shortlist. Hoddle in turn rejected the offer to restart his management career, eight years since his last job.

It is understood Parish became aware of allegations surrounding Mackay's departure from his previous club, Cardiff, and in particular his longstanding row with the club's controversial chairman and owner Vincent Tan.

Mackay was furious when he was sacked by Tan in December and immediately demanded compensation for breach of contract, making his feelings clear about the Malaysian billionaire. Yet he later issued a public apology to Tan, praising his work for Cardiff and abandoning his claim for compensation.

What motivated Mackay's change of heart remains unclear but it is suspected the details may have persuaded Palace to rule out the former Scot.

Palace head towards the weekend and their home game on Saturday against West Ham without a manager. Tim Sherwood, also interviewed by Parish on Sunday, remains a possible candidate although as of tonight it was not clear what direction the club would take. Parish has also made enquiries about the former Tottenham and Fulham manager Martin Jol.

Hoddle did not feel that he could walk out on Queen's Park Rangers so soon after having been appointed by Harry Redknapp as a coach at the Premier League club. He had originally shown an interest in the job, but having been offered it decided against accepting.

Cardiff have pushed ahead with their plans to sue Palace over “spygate”, the subject of a Premier league investigation which found in the Welsh club's favour. The allegation from Cardiff was that Moody obtained details of their line-up before the game between the two clubs in April. The Premier League has already warned Palace that they could be fined up to £25,000 for the breach of league regulations.
