Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Stan Collymore must wait until next week to find out about his future as a Leicester City player, after his dressing-room row with his fellow striker Trevor Benjamin.

Peter Taylor, the Foxes' manager, took statements from both players over the flare-up which took place at half-time during Monday's reserve-team match with Charlton at Filbert Street.

Collymore left City's training headquarters after the hour-long meeting and has been instructed to stay away from the club until the investigation into the incident by Taylor has been completed.

"I want to investigate fully what went on," Taylor said. "I want something clear as to where we go with this situation. We have to do things right and in the correct manner.

"In the meantime Stan is not training. He is staying away from the club, which I think is best for everybody concerned."

Taylor revealed that Collymore had not stormed out of the ground after the row and was always scheduled to be substituted after 45 minutes of his match since asking for a transfer three weeks ago.

Taylor said: "It was agreed Stan was coming off at half-time and that he would go as soon as the second half started. He didn't rush out of the ground without us knowing."

European football's governing body, Uefa, has refused to overturn the booking for the Celtic midfielder Stilian Petrov against HJK Helsinki in the Uefa Cup first round. The Bulgarian international was cautioned for diving and the Hoops' manager, Martin O'Neill, had hoped that the referee would rescind his booking with the help of video evidence. But Uefa have upheld the Slovak referee Ladislav Gadosi's original decision.

Aberdeen have placed Eoin Jess on the transfer list after the forward rejected a new contract by the club. The 29-year-old will be out of contract next summer and can talk to other clubs before signing a pre-contract agreement in January.

Peter Schmeichel, Sporting Lisbon's Danish international goalkeeper, injured his knee in training yesterday and could be out for a month, the Portuguese club said. The former Manchester United player will miss tomorrow's home game with the leaders, Porto. He will have a full medical examination on Monday and is likely to be out of action for a month.

The Barcelona and former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit will be released from hospital later today after doctors said he had not suffered any serious injury from his clash of heads with his team-mate Phillip Cocu during Barcelona's Champions' League draw with Milan on Wednesday.
