As well as maintaining their long held interest in Sergio Ageuro, they are also considering a move for Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko.
Manager Carlo Ancelotti is eager to bolster his frontline, particularly with the impending absence of Didier Drogba, who will be taking part in the Africa Cup of Nations.
Chelsea also face the possibility of a transfer ban being imposed following the Gael Kakuta affair and are eager to bolster their ranks while they can.
Atletico Madrid striker Ageuro, who will cost in the region of £40m, was quoted today as saying: "Chelsea are interested in me because they think I can play an important role for the team.
"And I think I fit with their style of play."
Dzeko of Wolfsburg has been attracting interest from a host of clubs, including Manchester United, after his impressive displays for the German champions.
Valued at around £20m, Chelsea were considering 23-year-old Dzeko as an alternative to Aguero, but it's understood they are now interested in signing both players.
In further speculation today, Chelsea have been linked with German international Bastian Schweinsteiger.
Valued in the region of £25m, its understood the Bayern Munich midfielder is being considered as an alternative to Franck Ribery.
Left-footed Schweinsteiger can play on both wings and Ancelotti sees him as a useful addition to the squad.
