Chelsea are cautiously optimistic that Diego Costa will be fit for Saturday's match against Swansea City, despite the striker having to withdraw from the Spanish squad.

The 25-year-old was not able to play in the Euro 2016 qualifier against Macedonia after picking up a minor leg injury in the 1-0 friendly defeat to France last week; Costa complained of some discomfort in his left leg.

The £32m striker, who has four goals in the Premier League already this season, underwent a scan in Madrid before returning to west London. Chelsea are reported to have done their own tests on Costa and do not believe the injury to be serious - it is not thought to be related to the hamstring injury that threatened to keep the striker out of the win at Everton.

The striker has battled niggling injuries in the past few months with the striker not fully fit for either the Champions League final or for the World Cup.

Costa will be continually assessed over the remainder of this week with Chelsea facing Garry Monk's Swansea, the only other team in the Premier League with a 100 per cent record, on Saturday.

Should Costa not be fit in time for the game, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho could turn to new signing Loic Remy, who would make his debut, or Didier Drogba, who is yet to start since returning to the club.
