A hopeful Stamford Bridge crowd was elated once the Spaniard headed the ball to the back of the Saints' net after a brilliant cross by Branislav Ivanovic on 11 minutes.
However, eight minutes later Southampton midfielder Sadio Mane fell inside the box under the pressure of Nemanja Matic and Mike Dean pointed at the spot.
Thibaut Courtois almost saved Dusan Tadic's penalty kick but the shot deflected on the Belgian's legs and the Saints equalised.

Both Courtois and the visitors' Fraser Forster had a busy day as they produced crucial saves.
The Belgian stopped a free kick by Toby Alderweireld and a shot by Mane whereas the England international denied Eden Hazard, Oscar and Loic Remy.
Now Jose Mourniho's side is six points ahead of Manchester City with ten games left in the season.
