From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Mourinho has been promised money to spend in the transfer market to improve a team that led the Premier League from start to finish.
But Mourinho said: "The most important thing is to keep the squad, to keep the players we have.
"In my previous squad I had players I was happy to sell and to make money from them. In this squad I have no players where I am happy to do that, not me or the board. We are not selling many players.
"I want to keep my important players and in this squad it is it easy to see that all of them were important because the squad was made of 15-16 players plus the young boys.
"Obviously we are going to try to improve the squad and there will be a rotation of the young players. At this moment our young players are prepared for good, difficult loans, which they weren't before.
"Our squad next season will be very similar to this one, with a couple of new players. That's the basic improvement."
Chelsea will also be looking to extend Mourinho's contract, which currently has two years left to run.
But Mourinho insists it is not a major priority and explained: "I don't need a contract. Mr (Roman) Abramovich), in my opinion, has to be very calm because he has me, I am in his hands.
"I want to stay, I don't want to leave. I'm not asking for new contract or a better contract. I am very calm.
"He doesn't have to be worried, he has me. If he wants me to stay I stay, the day he wants me to leave, I leave.
"I am already working for the next season so I know I'm staying. More important than a two-year or 10-year contract is my desire to stay and his desire for me to stay."
While Chelsea are fully aware of the great job Mourinho has done in securing their first Premier League trophy for five years, he has ended the campaign without a single Manager of the Month award.
The only other coach to be ignored after finishing first in the Premier League era was Mourinho as well, back in 2006.
But he is not bitter and said: "My objective for the season is to be champion and a part of that is what comes, comes and what doesn't come, doesn't come.
"I would like to know who the people on the panel are because maybe one day I meet somebody in some meeting or some match and I want to hug him (jokingly puts hands to throat).
"I know I have been top from the opening day and for many months had no defeats, only victories. But I can do nothing. I can just enjoy my title, which is the most important thing."
