Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is facing a period on the sidelines after injuring his knee in training.

It is not yet known how long the Belgian No 1 will be missing, with Courtois to undergo a full examination at some point today. The Blues will give a full update on his condition when Jose Mourinho holds a press conference on Friday afternoon.

The 23-year-old played for his country during the international break and returned at full fitness, only to hurt his knee during the first session back on Wednesday.

According to the Evening Standard, the injury is not believed to be to his cruciate ligaments, but Courtois is still facing time out.

Asmir Begovic, bought from Stoke City for £8million to replace Petr Cech, will likely make his second start for the club against Everton on Saturday; he had played against Manchester City after Courtois was sent off in the draw with Swansea City.

The news comes at a bad time for Mourinho, who would have been hoping to get Chelsea back to top form, starting at Goodison Park. The Blues have picked up only four points from their first four matches of the season and already find themselves eight points behind unbeaten pace setters Manchester City.
