Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Charlie Adam stunned Stamford Bridge - and those watching around the world - with an absolutely amazing goal to draw Stoke City level against Chelsea.
The Scottish midfielder, inserted into the team by Mark Hughes to stiffen up the midfield, scored one of the best goals you're ever likely to see.
Chelsea were in a comfortable lead thanks to a penalty from Eden Hazard before Adam produced a moment of brilliance.
The Blues were on the attack when Stoke nicked the ball and went the other way.
But rather than look for other attackers, the 29-year-old looked up and spotted goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois off his line.
The midfielder walloped the ball from a whopping 64.5 yards (59m) at 45.1mph just before the break to make it 1-1 at half-time.
Courtois furiously back peddled and gots a hand to the ball but couldn't quite get enough purchase on the ball to tip it over.
The goal is already being hailed as one of the best ever on social media and has been compared to long range greats from David Beckham, Asmir Begovic and Xabi Alonso.
It was all in vain, however, as Chelsea pounced on a Begovic mistake for Loic Remy to score a crucial winner. The Blues are now seven points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
"The disappointing thing is we lost the game," said Adam, speaking after the game.
"On a personal note it is a great goal to score. I saw the keeper off his line, had an effort and it has gone in.
"I always have a look at the goalkeeper because these balls move so much. When you have got that much space and time it is good to do something like that.
"It was great to get back into the game, but we lost it and that is three on the bounce and we need to come back against West Ham next week."
