From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Laurent Blanc has signed a new one-year contract with Manchester United.

The former French international defender spent 10 months at United last season after agreeing to a similar 12-month deal and was offered a new contract before the summer. Blanc, 36, asked for time to think over his future and has now agreed terms on a further one-year spell.

The Arsenal manager, Arsène Wenger, has thrown his support behind the out-of-contract David Seaman, who turns 39 in September, and said that he wants to extend the England goalkeeper's Highbury career towards his 40th birthday.

Wenger said: "I can understand why Sven Goran Eriksson [the England coach] wants to keep David on – as it's the same reason I want him to stay at Arsenal. That reason is because he is the best goalkeeper in England. It's as simple as that. We will talk about things in the next few days and I hope he decides to stay on."

Wenger is due back at Arsenal's London Colney training ground, near St Albans, next week, to prepare for the Double-winning Gunners' pre-season tour to Austria.

Before then, the Frenchman will take time out from his holiday for contract talks with Robert Pires near his holiday base. The left-sided midfielder has spent the summer at a sports clinic in St Raphael in the south of France, fighting his way back to fitness after the cruciate knee ligament injury he sustained in March.

The 28-year-old is under contract until summer 2004, but wants to commit himself to Highbury for another 12 months.

The Gunners' Swedish international Fredrik Ljungberg is facing an exploratory hip operation that will rule him out for two months. He is to undergo surgery on a small tear to the cartilage around his hip.

The Bolton manager, Sam Allardyce, has made a move for Chris Armstrong, who is leaving Tottenham at the end of his contract. The striker has suffered a succession of injuries in the last couple of years, but Wanderers will face competition from Wolves to sign him.

Bolton head to Poland today to start pre-season training, but Allardyce could stay behind to complete the deal. The French international midfielder Youri Djorkaeff, who had a spell at Bolton late last season, is ready to return to the club.

The Parma defender Antonio Benarrivo has lowered his wage demands and expects to sign for Fulham tomorrow.
