From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Emmanuel Adebayor made it to the stands last night and Gareth Barry finally provided some sense of what the summer acquisitions should bring, in as energetic an individual display as pre-season allows, in Manchester City's first win of their pre-season tour.

Barry provided as much industry on his debut in a City shirt as any of his team-mates, with a booking to go with several runs into the Kaizer Chiefs penalty area before making way for another debutant, Javan Vidal, City's England Under-20 international. The local fans provided considerably more colour than City – their gestures to their own bench that the chairman's son Kaizer Motaung Jnr be substituted were resisted by the Chiefs' Serbian coach Vladimir Vermezovic, despite the player side-footing a gilt-edged chance wide nine minutes from time.

It was not the first time there was pandemonium among City's youthful-looking back line, with Ben Mee and Ryan McGivern standing in the box where City hope Joleon Lescott and John Terry will eventually be. Steven Ireland secured the win in the second minute of first-half injury time, running hard in to convert Kelvin Etuhu's low cross from the right, left footed.

There was a start for Felipe Caicedo and Javier Garrido replaced Wayne Bridge late on – but both seem destined to leave. A loan deal is under discussion that would take Caicedo to Sporting Lisbon and a move to Racing Santander is posssible for Garrido.

Terrace anthems: Football club bands

Kaiser Chiefs Highly-successful Leeds indie band named after the South African club as the Leeds United captain at the time, Lucas Radebe, used to play for them.

Saint Etienne Nineties dance outfit from south London who took their name from the French side which once featured Michel Platini.

Astonvilla French band whose members are all huge football fans, but they also liked the amalgamation of "Aston Martin" and "Pancho Villa".
