Arsene Wenger is confident he will not face the same contract issues with Jack Wilshere as he does and did with Theo Walcott and Robin van Persie.

Arsenal have been criticised in recent years for their failure to sign their star players to long-term contracts, an issue which has destabilised the club with high profile exits from the Emirates.

With one year remaining on his deal, Robin van Persie was allowed to leave for Manchester United during the summer for £24m. A similar scenario the previous year saw Samir Nasri and Gael Clichy join Manchester City.

The latest contract impasse involves Theo Walcott who will be a free agent in the summer and able to speak to other clubs in January about a possible summer switch.

The focus is now turning to Jack Wilshere, the 20-year-old England international who recently returned from a lengthy injury lay-off.

Arsenal are understood to be in preliminary negotiations over a contract extension with Wilshere and Wenger remains relaxed about the deal.

"He has two-and-a-half years left - that's quite a long time. We have built a team [where] we have a lot of young English players, or British players like Gibbs, Chamberlain, Wilshere. We still have the case of [Theo] Walcott, Aaron Ramsey. You want them all on long-term contracts," Wenger said.

Wenger does not foresee Wilshere causing problems over the deal and fully expects the player who has been at the club since the age of nine to commit.

"Jack has always been very committed to this club and I hope he will show that. There is only one way to show it and that is to commit your long-term future to the club," the Arsenal boss said.
