Arsene Wenger has branded some members of media “too emotional” after the stringent criticism which followed Arsenal’s 3-2 defeat by Manchester United on Sunday.
The Frenchman was the subject of the majority of the comments with supporters, pundits and former players disgruntled with their continued difficulty to take a hold of the Premier League title race.
Following the Old Trafford set-back – and the earlier 2-0 reverse to Barcelona in the Champions League – the Gunners are five points adrift of leaders Leicester City and face an uphill task to reach the next round in Europe.
“I’ve never surprised by the criticism by the media,” Wenger said ahead of the match against Swansea City on Wednesday night. “I think people have been a bit excessive, a bit too emotional. We’ve had a bad week, two wins and we have a very good week.
“We want to transform negatives into positives to create more solidarity. We play to fight for the title. This club is built on values and what we want to do is respect them. We want to build solidarity every day.
“We want to give our best until the end of the season. We gave a lot against Barcelona and that certainly had an impact on our belief against Manchester United.
“I enjoy very much that people care about my future and I thank them for that.”
Wenger also revealed that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is set to miss up to eight weeks with a knee injury: “He will be out for six to eight weeks but he won’t need surgery.”
