Arsenal are set to review Arsene Wenger’s position in the summer, with the Frenchman now appearing to be closer than ever to leaving his job at the Emirates Stadium.

The club board has started to draw up a list of potential candidates for the position, with Arsenal a distant sixth in the Premier League table and steel reeling from their chastising 3-0 defeat by Manchester City in the EFL Cup final.

It is understood that Wenger, who has been in charge of the north London club for 22 years, will fight to see out the two-year contract extension he signed last summer.

But the Arsenal hierarchy are believed to be growing increasingly hungry for change, with Wenger more likely to be jettisoned than ever before.

Much will now depend on how Arsenal’s performance in the closing stages of the season, particularly in the Europa League.

Arsenal play Italian giants AC Milan in the Round of 16 stage, with a place in next season’s Champions League on offer for the winners of the tournament.

Leading Arsenal to the European title could be enough to save Wenger’s jobs, but with teams such as Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid and Lazio still in the competition, it will prove a tough ask.
