Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang struck what proved to be the winner after the interval as Arsenal moved top of the fledgling Premier League table.
Dani Ceballos and David Luiz made full debuts for the hosts while club record signing Nicolas Pepe came off the bench in the second half.
