Arsene Wenger is set to be given an early reward for leading Arsenal to the top of the Premier League after it emerged that he will be handed another contract extension to keep him at the club until 2019.

Wenger watched on as his side battled to a 2-1 victory over Everton on Saturday evening courtesy of goals from Olivier Giroud and Laurent Koscielny. Ross Barkley pulled one back for the Toffees to give Arsenal a major score, but they clung on to victory to leapfrog Manchester City ahead of their derby with Manchester United later today.

Wenger still has over a year to run on his current deal as it does not expire until summer 2017, having penned the contract after the Gunners’ FA Cup success in last year. Since then, Wenger has added a second FA Cup success as well as two Community Shield victories, but despite falling away in last season’s Premier League title battle and coming unstuck in the Champions League once again in the first knockout round defeat by Monaco, the Mirror reports that Wenger will be offered a new deal.

It’s reported that the club hierarchy are eager to keep Wenger at the club beyond 2017 despite failing to win the league since 2004 and the famous ‘Invincibles’ season.

But with Arsenal making a strong start to the domestic season and their European hopes significantly boosted by the 2-0 win over Bayern Munich this week, Wenger could benefit more than he will have initially thought.

A renewed optimism at the club is behind the belief that the 11-year wait for the title could soon be ended. It’s added that there is money available to spend in January should Wenger wish to strengthen the squad, although the Frenchman has proven prudent with his transfer business even when Arsenal have looked significantly weaker than the current side.

Despite the reports emerging overnight, it’s believed that talks will not officially begin until the end of the season when Wenger will have a year remaining on his deal. His last renewal saw talks go down to the wire, and the club will be keen to avoid a repeat of the situation which saw Wenger’s future left in limbo throughout the end of the 2013/14 season.
