Welbeck, 27, is set for an extended period on the sidelines after suffering a “significant” ankle injury in the first-half of the club’s goalless draw with Sporting last week.
The forward was immediately taken to hospital and has since undergone two operations.
“Further to sustaining an injury last Thursday against Sporting CP, Danny has undergone a second planned operation on his right ankle,” Arsenal said in a statement on their official website.
“Both procedures went well, without complications. Danny will now recuperate and start his rehabilitation. It's too early to say how long this will take.
“Everyone at the club will now be providing Danny with the best possible treatment and support in order to make him fit again as soon as possible.”
After the 1-1 draw with Wolves, goalkeeper Bernd Leno revealed that the entire Arsenal squad FaceTimed the injured striker in the dressing room ahead of the game.
“We talked to Danny in the meeting before the game, we had a FaceTime session with him,” Leno said.
“It was very good, we wanted to win for him.
“We all are sorry for him for his injury, and hope he will have a good recovery and to see him on the pitch because he's an important player for the team and also in the dressing room.
“He looked very happy and I think he was happy to talk to us because he is still a big part of our team and we will support him to have a good time when he is injured.”
