Sol Campbell has called on Arsenal's talented youngsters to work harder and be more professional if they are to blossom into a side that can win trophies year after year.

Campbell, 35, has been impressed by the potential at the Emirates since he rejoined the club in a short-term deal in January. But he has also issued a veiled warning that more must be done if a team that includes talents such as Cesc Fabregas, Robin van Persie, Andrei Arshavin and Theo Walcott is to deliver trophies to a club which has won nothing since the 2005 FA Cup.

Campbell said: "The main thing is you've got to get the right balance. There's a fantastic amount of talent here and we just have to believe we can win a major trophy – and you also need a bit of the rub of the green now and again.

"That said, I believe you make your own luck in the game. How you play, how you conduct yourselves, how you approach games, making sure you are seriously thinking about football. I think you create luck with all those things combined. Training-wise, you have to work hard on your weaknesses, preparing yourself properly for the game, on and off the field.

"It's not that you have to be locked up 24/7, but I think all these things do add up. You ensure that things go your way by doing all the things which come before you actually step on the pitch. We've got a lot of that in place here and I'm sure that, once everything comes together, there will be no stopping Arsenal winning trophies season after season. You have to truly believe in your skill and trust that you can do something."

The Arsenal manager, Arsène Wenger, admitted at the weekend that Campbell's influence on the club has forced him to reconsider his transfer policy and he will now look at attracting more experienced players. Wenger says he will have fewer restraints on him in the transfer market this summer.

He said: "The construction of the Emirates Stadium meant that for many years we could not spend a lot of money. Our financial situation has greatly improved. We are finally able to buy the players we think we need."
