Arsene Wenger has given his latest update on Arsenal’s injury concerns ahead of their trip to face Swansea on Sunday in the Premier League.

Captain Mikel Arteta has been ruled out with a short-term injury after suffering a grade one hamstring strain in the 3-3 draw with Anderlecht. Arteta will miss the match in Wales, although the return of Jack Wilshere will ease concerns in the Gunners midfield.

Wilshere suffered a blow to the knee that ruled him out of last week’s 3-0 win against Burnley, and he was absent for the Champions League match in midweek after suffering from a virus, but Wenger confirmed that the England international – who had been in good form up until his injury – will be part of the squad for Sunday’s match.

“Arteta will be out for Sunday,” Wenger told arsenal.co.uk. “He has a mild hamstring strain and he will be out for a short period because it's a grade one. He should be back after the internationals.

“Jack is alright, he is back in the squad for Sunday.”

In terms of the long-term injuries that Wenger is assessing, Olivier Giroud are likely to be the first ones back as the two Frenchman near a return to training.

“Giroud joins in training next week,” Wenger added. “Laurent Koscielny has a little chance to be back after the international break.”

However, the Gunners still have a number of injuries to first-team players who will not return until closer to Christmas at the earlier.

“Mathieu Debuchy, David Ospina and Mesut Özil are progressing very well, but of course they are not available before or straight after the international break.”

Özil’s recovery timescale is somewhat unknown at present, although the World Cup winner has been keeping fans updated with his rehabilitation by posting pictures of himself working in the gym.
