Danny Welbeck is set to give Arsenal a major boost this weekend by returning against his former side Manchester United on Sunday.

The England striker has been sidelined since late April with a knee injury, but is set to return to the the Gunners line-up for the Premier League game. He has already scored the winning goal at Old Trafford once this season already, in the 2-1 FA Cup sixth-round win in March.

Welbeck, 24, has scored eight goals for the club this season since joining from United for £16m in September.

Before the 1-0 defeat against Swansea on Monday, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said: "He will play again this season. He had all the scans and medical checks, and there was nothing major, just an inflammation. For the weekend he will be certainly short but for the game after he should be alright."

Arsenal vice-captain Per Mertesacker has spoken about Sunday's Premier League fixture. United will overtake the Gunners with a win.

"We won [at Old Trafford] once and it's possible to do that twice per season,” the German centre back said. “We are looking forward to it.

"It'll be a massive crowd again and they will have respect [for us]. We are still in a good mood and have a good level of confidence and we are looking forward to the next four games."
