Anthony Martial has won the Barclays Premier League Player of the Month award for September after scoring three goals and assisting one in his very first month in the English top flight.

The Manchester United striker settled in rapidly at Old Trafford to score the third goal in the 3-1 victory over Liverpool on his debut, before going on the net twice in the 3-2 comeback win over Southampton a week later.

The 19-year-old becomes the first Manchester United player to clinch the award since Robin van Persie did so in April 2013, and comes just 43 days after he completed a £36m move from Monaco in a record transfer for a teenager. The fee could yet rise to £58m should performance bonuses be met.

Martial becomes just the ninth player to secure the award in his first full month in the Premier League, joining Jurgen Klinsman, David Ginola, Jose Antonio Reyes, Deco, Peter Odimwingie, Edin Dzeko, Diego Costa and Andre Ayew as those to have won the award following a transfer to the top flight.

However, United were not able to pull off the clean sweep as manager Louis van Gaal was beaten to the coaches’ gong by Tottenham’s Mauricio Pochettino. The Spurs manager guided his side to three wins from three in the League, which included the 4-1 demolition of leaders Manchester City.
