Pundits usually choose their words carefully in the age of social media when five-second clips can spread like wildfire.

So when Alan Shearer was analysing Manchester United, he appeared to sum up a restless fanbase, seemingly forgetting he was live on air.

“That’s where Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to get to. At the minute, in terms of football teams, Man United are f***ed,” the former England striker appeared to conclude on Premier League Productions.

After a dismal run of seven defeats in 10 games, Shearer’s perceived words, while brutally honest, appeared accurate, if not a little too colourful for live television.

But Shearer denied making the expletive rant, stating: “Very clever and very funny whoever did this!! #fakenews”

And now an extended clip of his analysis has emerged, revealing his words in full.

Shearer can be heard saying: “At the minute, in terms of football teams, Man United are f... Sorry, Man City are far, far ahead of Manchester United.”

With Shearer’s full views coming to light, some may concur more with the interpreted views from the edited clip.

Quite whether United’s long-term prospects will prove to be better than the initial interpretation of Shearer’s views remains to be seen.

There remains an outside chance of a top four finish, but with Paul Pogba looking for a move and interest from Real Madrid, United face a long rebuild.
