Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.“We just can't find the net,” Sam Allardyce conceded after his West Ham side’s impotent display against Southampton in their goalless draw at the weekend, but was he really talking about the Premier League as a whole?
Unless there are five goals in tonight's match between Swansea and Liverpool, the Premier League will have started with the lowest amount of goals ever scored in the division after four matchrounds. There has currently been 74 goals scored in the Premier League this season, that’s a massive 42 goals less than at this stage last season.
Premier League goals after four matchrounds:
2013/14 - 74
2012/13 - 116
2011/12 - 96
2010/11 - 115
2009/10 - 103
2008/09 - 117
2007/08 - 99
2006/07 - 91
2005/06 - 85
2004/05 - 116
2003/04 - 108
2002/03 - 95
2001/02 - 93
2000/01 - 127
1999/00 - 107
1998/99 - 78
1997/98 - 100
1996/97 - 97
1995/96 - 92
1994/95 - 119
1993/94 – 113
1992/93 - 120
But that’s not all, despite being the second highest scoring division last season; the Premier League has seen fewer goals than in any of the other five major European top-flight leagues in this campaign. Exactly double the amount of goals have been scored in German Bundesliga than the Premier League, although they have played one more round of matches.
2013/14
Germany (Bundesliga) - 148 goals (3.28 goals per game)
Spain (La Liga) - 117 (3.08)
France (Ligue 1) - 104 (2.08)
Italy (Serie A) - 87 (3)
England (Premier League) - 74 (1.90)
