Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Manchester City are planning to sell Nicky Weaver following the goalkeeper's row with manager Kevin Keegan over an early-morning nightclub altercation.

Keegan has been trying to crack down on the drink culture that has dogged the club and reacted angrily after reports that Weaver had been part of a scuffle outside Bredbury Hall in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Weaver had gone out with his girlfriend after returning from the Crystal Palace match on Saturday, but later became involved in an angry exchange outside the club as he waited for a taxi. A punch was allegedly thrown at him.

Despite Weaver's protestations of innocence, Keegan has remained unmoved and the goalkeeper has told friends he will not be picked for City again.

Derby have moved the date of their FA Cup third-round tie with Plymouth Argyle or Bristol Rovers following police advice. Officers requested that the tie be played on Sunday, 6 January due to "operational commitments".

The Leicester manager Dave Bassett has taken the 26-year-old Norwegian midfielder Daniel Berg Hestad on a two-week trial from Molde.

Graeme Souness is trying to sign the Slovenia international striker Milan Osterc, but wants him on trial first. The Blackburn Rovers manager has asked the experienced forward, who featured prominently in Hapoel Tel Aviv's Uefa Cup run, to come to Ewood for a few days.

Osterc is keen to join Blackburn, but is reluctant to leave the Israeli side for training rather than a guaranteed full-time move. Souness has been quoted a fee of £750,000.

Sheffield Wednesday have signed the defender Marlon Broomes on a free transfer from Blackburn.

The Wales captain Gary Speed said he is "shocked" at reports that their 1-0 victory over Belarus in the World Cup qualifier in October was fixed.

The Belarus goalkeeper Gennady Tumilovich claimed some of his players took bribes to lose against Wales – a result which could have handed the Ukraine the chance to qualify for Japan and South Korea through the play-offs.

Speed said: "It was a complete shock to hear such things, but all I know about that game was every player gave their very best."
