Wayne Rooney sends incredibly bland birthday tweet to wife Coleen, hoping she 'has a nice day'

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Wayne Rooney, the hopeless (or clueless) romantic.

The Manchester United striker hasn't forgot what day today is, and has sent a simple tweet out to his wife Coleen to wish her a happy birthday, accompanied by the rather bland "have a nice day", and minus any kisses.

The pair have been together since they were teenagers, and married in 2008. They have two children, Kai and Klay.

Maybe Coleen should be thankful for the personalised tweet itself. Despite Rooney being prolific on the pitch - he has notched 17 goals in all competitions for struggling United this season - he has not carried this form over to Twitter, and rarely says anything of note except retweeting Nike adverts.

Coleen, who turns 28 today, has not tweeted her acknowledgement of her husband's banal message yet, which read: "Happy Birthday to my wife @ColeenRoo hope you have a nice day."
