From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The latest Nike advert has been revealed featuring leading sportsmen Rory McIlroy and Wayne Rooney, with the pair taking each other on in a demonstration of their skills on the golf course.
While the ad starts off as a regular introduction for the Northern Irish golfer, McIlroy is soon joined by a smiling Rooney on the tee, grinning as the two-time Major winner tees off to get their round underway.
However, Rooney has a trick up his sleeve, as he unveils the new Nike Ordem Football as his ball of choice. The latest design by the sportswear giant is based around the flight control of a golf ball, and the Manchester United striker wastes no time in swinging and swerving the ball along the golf course – hitting the pin with his first attempt with a little help from a computer-based friend.
As the pair make their way around the course, they soon emerge as the two leaders on the scoreboard (uncanny, right?) and it’s neck and neck when they arrive at the 18. But Rooney, who has previously admitted to handing over the penalty taking responsibility to team-mate Robin van Persie, cracks under the pressure once again as he hits an errand ball towards the clubhouse.
But as McIlroy shouts out “foreeee” to alert the unaware crowd gathered outside, one familiar face breaks away from an interview to head the ball back onto the green and set Rooney up for an easy finish, much to McIlroy’s despair.
This familiar face? None other than Brazilian legend Ronaldo, whose cheeky smile is match by the two on-course competitors.
All that is left is for McIlroy to sneak the Ordem ball into his bag as his caddy looks on, but don’t expect him to be unveiling a football on the first tee at Augusta in April when the first Major of 2014 gets underway.
