Video: One Direction star Louis Tomlinson left hobbling and vomiting by Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor

21-year-old received a robust shoulder from Agbonlahor that sent him crashing to the ground, and forced him off the pitch where he was said to vomit due to the pain in his knee

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Gabriel Agbonlahor may be used to getting booed by opposition fans when he scores against them for Aston Villa, but the English striker may be set for a whole new level of criticism.

The 26-year-old was playing in Stiliyan Petrov’s charity match at Celtic’s Parkhead this afternoon when he clattered into One Direction star Louis Tomlinson, leaving the 21-year-old in a heap on the floor and clutching his knee.

But it didn’t stop there. Tomlinson was physically sick when he left the pitch, with screams from the watching fans each time he got the ball turning to gasps as they feared the worst for the singer.

Agbonlahor was cheered for the tackle – mainly from the male sections of the crowd – although with the game still going on, he was receiving a torrent of abuse on social media site Twitter.

The match was organised to raise money for leukaemia treatment after Bulgarian footballer Petrov recently beat the illness. The match saw a Celtic XI take on a team selected by Petrov, who was forced to retire last season having captained Villa since 2009.

Petrov joined the Midlands club from Celtic in 2006, and went on to make over 200 appearances for the Villans, before taking on a coaching role with the club under current boss Paul Lambert.

Tomlinson famously joined Doncaster Rovers during the transfer window as part of Sky’s programme of visiting all 92 English Football League clubs in a day.

The One Direction man was due to feature in a reserves match for Rovers later this month having been a lifelong fan of the club, but those plans may have to be shelved after he left the pitch injured and vomiting.
