Team news: Wilkinson to take chair at Wednesday

Howard Wilkinson has been named interim chairman of the club after Lee Strafford's resignation yesterday. "I would like to thank Lee for his work over the past 18 months," said former Owls manager Wilkinson, who will serve as replacement until August.

Newcastle United

Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn has dismissed claims the Magpies will struggle on their return to the top-flight. "I'm sure they have learnt to give a lesser message out," Quinn said. "I wouldn't be surprised if Chris [Hughton, the Newcastle manager] has loads of money to spend."

Birmingham City

Manager Alex McLeish has confirmed that the club have offered striker Garry O'Connor a new deal. The forward, out since October with groin and hip injuries, is out of contract and the club are believed to be offering the 27-year-old revised terms on his deal.

West Ham United

England goalkeeping great Peter Shilton believes Rob Green deserves the No 1 shirt for the World Cup. "For me, Green has not done a lot wrong," Shilton said. "With David James you know that there is that element of calamity every now and again."

Milan

Defender Oguchi Onyewu will play out his final year at the club without a salary after signing a 12-month contract extension. The US international, who made just one appearance last season due to a knee injury, told Milan he would play for free and the club accepted his offer.

Hull City

Left-back Bernard Mendy has left the KC Stadium by mutual consent. The 28-year-old Frenchman made 56 appearances for the Tigers after arriving in 2008. "Everybody at Hull would like to thank Bernard for his efforts," a club statement read.
