The Scot took up the position in February, having spent three-and-a-half years as the club’s head of football operations.
Before taking on the role of technical director, Rowan also oversaw the strategic direction of Brentford B – the elite squad of players, aged 17 to 21, which replaced the club’s academy.
He was previously sporting director of Stenhousemuir and worked as a scout and analyst for Celtic and the Scottish FA.
A statement released by Brentford on Tuesday afternoon read: “Brentford Football Club has to report the sad news that Robert Rowan died at the age of 28 on Monday, 12 November.
“All at the club have been left devastated by the news. All our thoughts are with Robert’s wife, his family and all his friends – many of whom work at Brentford FC.”
Numerous club figures and players have since paid tribute to Rowan following news of his passing.
Brentford chairman Mark Devlin said: "We are all simply devastated with this news. Rob was a terrific man and a great character around the club.
"We will all miss him greatly & will do all we can to support Rob's family at this incredibly difficult time. Our deepest condolences go to all of Rob's family and friends."
Brentford midfielder Alan Judge added: "So sad to hear this news this morning such a gent to be around. My thoughts r with his family and friends."
Former Bees analyst Ted Knutson said: "Absolutely devastated by the Rob Rowan news. Genuinely one of my favourite people in football and a rising star behind the scenes. We were just joking this week about how he needed to go fix Celtic's wage bill.
"My heart goes out to his wife, family, and extended BFC fam. RIP."
