The Sunday Mirror concurs, suggesting Smith has his sights set on a move to "boyhood favourites" Internazionale. The Mail on Sunday says Middlesbrough have offered £7m for the striker, while the News of the World reckons Boro are lining up a £12.5m bid for Smith, Mark Viduka and Danny Mills as Leeds clear the decks.

Claudio Ranieri has nine job offers to consider if he is sacked by Chelsea, according to the People. It says Tottenham, Real Madrid and Juventus have all made enquiries.

The same paper says the Tottenham chairman, Daniel Levy, has added the Spanish coach Javier Clemente to his list of candidates for the White Hart Lane job, but the Mirror insists Martin O'Neill is first choice, predicting an official approach for the Ulsterman, who is preferred to Carlos Queiroz, of Real Madrid, and the Italy coach Giovanni Trapattoni. The News of the World says Queiroz is Tottenham's main target and reports that O'Neill will not come because they cannot offer him European football.

Chelsea are ready to offer Roma defender Walter Samuel £50,000-a-week after tax to beat off competition from Real Madrid, according to the News of the World. The same paper reports a bid by Chelsea to sign Parma defender Matteo Ferrari from under the noses of Manchester United.

The People claims Liverpool are candidates along with Newcastle for Chelsea defender Mario Melchiot, who can leave Stamford Bridge on a free transfer in the summer.

The Express says Real Madrid will offer £42m to lure striker Ruud van Nistelrooy from Manchester United.

Newcastle want Ports-mouth's midfielder Amdy Faye while Birmingham's Bryan Hughes is set to join Pompey, according to the People, but the News of the World reckons Leicester's Muzzy Izzet is Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp's prime target.

The Bradford manager, Bryan Robson, is in the frame to take over at Sheffield Wednesday if Ken Bates takes control, according to the People.

Robbie Fowler is likely to pay the price for his £50,000-a-week pay packet and be sold by Manchester City, according to the Express, which says City cannot afford to offer him an extended contract on those terms and will cash in rather than lose Fowler on a free transfer 12 months from now.

The People says Celtic see the Cardiff striker Robert Earnshaw as a potential replacement for Henrik Larsson, and the Mirror reckons Earnshaw is poised for a £5m move.

Everton, Newcastle, Charlton and Tottenham will compete for the West Ham midfielder Michael Carrick, according to the News of the World, which also says Everton have given up on Birmingham's Robbie Savage.

Peter Reid is set to return to management with Coventry, says the News of the World.
