From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Nigel Pearson had just seen his Leicester side lose 3-1 to Chelsea, so it was understandable that he was in a prickly mood.

But no-one could have predicted the bizarre exchange he entered with a journalist over supposed criticism of his players.

After Pearson spoke of “the amount of criticism and negativity [his players] have had to endure over the course of the season”, the journalist asked him to specify what criticism, sparking the extraordinary exchange.

The best sentence Pearson used was undoubtedly: "If you don’t know the answer to that question then I think you are an ostrich." Read the full transcript here.

However, Pearson is by no means the first figure in sport to cause a surprise when speaking to the assembled press. Here, we take a look at some other memorable press conferences.

Was Pearson's rant acceptable? Let us know in the comments below.
