From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Police are investigating reports that Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi has been targeted by racists in an internet hate campaign.

The club's officials contacted Northumbria Police after the 30-year-old was alleged to have been targeted on the social networking site Facebook.

The comments have since been deleted.

A Magpies spokeswoman said the club would always take action against people racially abusing club players.

She said: "We have liaised with Northumbria Police and the matter is now in their hands.

"We have a zero-tolerance approach to racism and will always seek to take the strongest possible action."

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "We have received a report of racist comments made on Facebook, on which we're working closely with Newcastle United.

"Northumbria Police take all reports of racist abuse very seriously and inquiries are being conducted."

Ameobi, of Jesmond, is Newcastle's longest-serving player.

The 6ft 2in forward, who was born in Zaria, Nigeria, made his first team debut in a home game against Chelsea in September 2000.
