From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of setting fire to Liverpool striker Andy Carroll's Range Rover.

The 22-year-old England forward was playing for Newcastle when his chrome-plated vehicle was torched last October.

Carroll was staying with his then club captain Kevin Nolan in Ponteland, Northumberland, as part of bail conditions after being charged with assaulting ex-girlfriend Laurie Henderson, an 18-year-old lingerie model.

Graffiti relating to the charge was daubed on a garage wall at Nolan's home.

The case against Carroll, who signed for his new club for £35million in January, was later dropped.

Northumbria Police said they arrested a man at Newcastle Airport as he flew back into the country.

A spokesman said: "On Tuesday police arrested a 33-year-old man from the Whitley Bay area in connection with an arson that happened in Darras Road, Ponteland, on October 20, 2010."

He has been bailed until August.

Carroll had recently bought the Range Rover to celebrate a new five-year contract with his boyhood club.
