From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Frank Lampard has hit back at allegations from his former fiancée that he had been "heartless" over their break-up.

The Chelsea and England star called in to a London radio station to vent his anger at the comments made by Elen Rives which appeared in a newspaper article yesterday.

Rives said Lampard has turned the couple's home into a "bachelor pad" and was seeing another woman, during which time she and the couple's two daughters had been forced to live in a small flat. The couple split up last November.

Today Lampard called in to LBC for an emotional exchange with the radio presenter James O'Brien.

Lampard said: I hope one day your wife or girlfriend doesn’t come to you and say she doesn't want to be with you, and that means you won't see the kids a few days a week."

He continued: “Unfortunately it has had a large impact on my relationship at home and I find it insulting that I wouldn't fight it tooth and nail, that's what I have spent time doing. You don't know anything about me. I find it insulting that you are insinuating that I am weak and scum because I have not fought tooth and nail.

“You're saying any man that lets his kids live in inferior circumstances to him is weak and scum. You're insinuating that about me. I grade myself as a human being as how well I bring up my kids. I have woken up sometimes and seen a newspaper report of me coming out of a bar or club and they take pictures of two different women who I have never ever spoken to and say I spent all night sitting next to them. Then I have to wake up and listen to idiots like you, I have to put up with it and I've got to keep my mouth shut.”

Today is the first anniversary of the death of Lampard's mother Pat: “My sister has been listening to this and it's the anniversary of my mum's death, so do you think my sister needs to hear you saying things like that on a radio station?” Lampard told O’Brien.

“Sometimes you need to think about things before you speak about them. I'll speak to you man to man about that, forget the radio station, I'll speak to you man to man.”
