Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Liverpool have lost their England midfielder Steven Gerrard for a minimum of three weeks, after he was carried off with a groin injury during Wednesday's Champions' League draw with Galatasaray at Anfield.

The injury has ruled Gerrard out of today's Merseyside derby with Everton, and yesterday Liverpool's caretaker manager Phil Thompson confirmed that the player would miss the next three weeks. It means he will not travel with the squad tomorrow for the return in Istanbul and he could also miss matches against Fulham, Newcastle and Barcelona.

Thompson said: "It would have been unfair straight after the match to have made a quick decision about his fitness. He has had a scan and we now do not expect him back for as long as three weeks. Because of the sort of injuries Steven has had in the past we have to be very careful with him and not take any risks. What is a shame is that he has recently rediscovered his form and is just getting better and better."

The Arsenal winger Robert Pires is close to signing a new contract, the Gunners' manager Arsène Wenger said yesterday. The Frenchman, 29, has two years left on his current deal but has agreed terms on a two-year extension. "We are close and we just have to finalise it with Robert," Wenger said. "The players feel the club has strong goals and strong ambition. They want to be part of that."

Pires's desire to stay at Arsenal was apparently boosted by Wenger also committing himself to a new contract – and the winger's form has certainly been a revelation this season.

"He's been consistent, he's scored important goals and he's given many assists," Wenger said. It's difficult to ask for any more – but we want more.

"Since he's adjusted to the physical side of the English game and the pace of it, he's taken a big step forward.

"He's not an aggressive player but he's a physical player. Just look at the distance he covers in a game."
