Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Defender Craig Thomson is to leave Hearts, the Scottish Premier League club confirmed yesterday. The 20-year-old was suspended last month following a conviction for "lewd, libidinous and indecent behaviour".

"Craig Thomson will leave Heart of Midlothian Football Club imminently," the club announced in a short statement.

"The club has considered all implications surrounding the issue and has decided to find a solution for the player to leave the club over the forthcoming days."

Fenerbahce chairman arrested over match-fixing

A court in Istanbul jailed the chairman of league champions Fenerbahce yesterday pending trial on charges of match-fixing, in an investigation which could result in the club being stripped of their title.

Aziz Yildirim joins 25 people already remanded in custody after police raids at the weekend, prompted by evidence of manipulation in 19 matches. Yildirim had been taken for medical treatment after prosecutors called for him to be jailed on Friday, but his questioning was completed yesterday, and the court ordered him to be jailed.
