Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.A Blackburn Rovers supporter has died after being critically injured during the club's match at Stoke on Saturday. The 30-year-old fan was found unconscious in a stand at the Britannia Stadium during the match, which the Potters won 3-0.
He was treated at the scene for a head injury and cardiac arrest after being found collapsed in the concourse area of the South Stand just after half-time.
A police spokesman confirmed the man had died in hospital just before 2am yesterday morning. "A 30-year-old man was pronounced dead at 1.55am," he said. "The circumstances are being investigated and a 25-year-old man remains in custody and is helping with inquiries." A statement on the Blackburn Rovers website said the man was among a 1,300-strong following in the South Stand.
Pompey set for further ownership upheaval
Portsmouth executive director Mark Jacob has revealed "two or three groups" have approached the board regarding a possible takeover. Hong Kong businessman Balram Chainrai seized control last week when he acquired Ali al-Faraj's 90 per cent stake in the club. "There are potentially two or three groups who have approached the board," he said. "It's delicate but we are confident a group will be in place very soon to move things forward to allow Mr Chainrai to step aside."
Keane opens account
Robbie Keane scored his first goal for Celtic in yesterday's 4-2 Scottish Cup victory over Dunfermline. The 29-year-old striker, who joined the Bhoys on loan from Tottenham last week, came on as a half-time substitute to score Celtic's fourth from the penalty spot. Dunfermline had led 2-1 in the first half, before goals from Diomansy Kamara, Morten Rasmussen and a Calum Woods own goal turned things round.
