David Beckham today announced his retirement from professional football after a career spanning 20 years.

With 115 caps, the former England captain was at the heart of the national side for more than a decade, and is the only English player to win championships in four different countries.

Making his debut in 1996, Beckham was the first name on the team sheet for much of his international career and played in two World Cup quarter finals.

In a statement today he said: “I'm thankful to PSG for giving me the opportunity to continue but I feel now is the right time to finish my career, playing at the highest level.”

His footwork landed him contracts with Manchester United, Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain. Here are some of his best goals.

Manchester United v Real Madrid, 2000

England v Greece, 2001

England v Argentina, 2002

Manchester United v Wimbledon, 1996

England v Columbia, 1998

England v Ecuador, 2006

Man United v Everton, 2003

LA Galaxy v Chicago Fire, 2012
